Meet SpREAD the Word: Literacy Is a Community Right

At PEACES Collective, we are clear about something:

Literacy is not charity. Literacy is justice.

And every child deserves access to it.

That is why we created SpREAD the Word — a literacy initiative grounded in equity, empowerment, and community care.

What Is SpREAD the Word?

SpREAD the Word exists to provide children and families with:

• Home libraries

• Early literacy support

• Community-centered educational resources

• Stories that reflect identity, culture, and possibility

Because books are not just tools for school.

Books are tools for liberation.

The Reality We Refuse to Ignore

In the DMV, like many parts of the country, access to books and literacy support often depends on zip code.

Some children grow up surrounded by books, enrichment programs, and academic resources.

Others grow up in “book deserts,” where the nearest library is far, school resources are stretched, and families are doing the best they can with too little support.

That is not a personal failure.

That is systemic inequity.

And we are committed to changing it.

Why Home Libraries?

A home library means:

📖 A child can read anytime, not just at school 📖 Families can build routines of learning together 📖 Books become normal, joyful, accessible 📖 Literacy becomes part of daily life

Ownership matters.

When a child has books of their own, they begin to see themselves as readers — and as capable.

Our Impact So Far

With support from our community, last year we established:

📚 150 home libraries for Head Start children and families in Baltimore City and Howard County.

And now we are expanding.

Our goal is to provide:

✨ 500 families with home libraries.

Because every child deserves a shelf of stories and a future full of words.
