Community Is a Verb: Turning Connection Into Action
We often talk about “community” as though it is something we simply belong to—a neighborhood, a school, a church, an organization, or a group of people who share something in common.
But real community is more than a place or a group.

It is something we create through our actions. It happens when we show up, reach out, lend a hand, share what we know, and make room for others to thrive.

💪Small Actions Can Make a Big Difference
Building community doesn't always require a grand gesture.
📖 It can look like a volunteer sitting down to read a story to a preschooler.
👨🏽👩🏽👦🏽👦🏽 It can be a family receiving books that help them begin a home library.
🧵 It can be a local maker turning creativity into economic opportunity.
🆘 It can be someone sharing their skills, mentoring a young person, supporting a small business, volunteering at an event, or simply asking a neighbor, “How can I help?”
Individually, these actions may seem small. Collectively, they create something powerful: connection🤝.
And connection is one of the foundations of a thriving community.
👧🏽👦🏽Investing in Our Youngest Neighbors
Through our flagship literacy initiative, SpREAD the Word, we see community in action every time a volunteer opens a book and begins reading to a child.
Our work goes beyond StoryTime. We are helping children and families build home libraries, encouraging parents and caregivers to make reading part of everyday life, and creating opportunities for community members to participate in a child's early learning journey.
Why begin with young children?
Because the earliest years provide an important foundation for learning. When children have access to books, conversations, caring adults, and opportunities to explore their curiosity, we help create conditions in which they can grow and thrive.
Investing in children is an investment in the future of our entire community.
👥Creativity Builds Community, Too
Community is also built when people create together.
Sewing, quilting, crafting, cooking, storytelling, music, and other creative traditions have brought people together for generations. They provide opportunities to teach, learn, exchange ideas, preserve traditions, and build relationships across generations.
That belief is part of the inspiration behind our developing Sewing for the S.O.U.L. initiative and our commitment to supporting local makers and handcrafted goods.
When we support local creativity, we are doing more than purchasing a product. We can help circulate resources within our communities while honoring the talents of the people who live and work there.
That is cooperative economics in action.

One of the most important things about community is that everyone has something to contribute.
You don't have to lead an organization or make a large donation to make a difference.
📚You can read to a child.

Strong communities aren't built by one organization or one person. They are built when many people decide that the well-being of their neighbors matters.
🎉Our Village Is Coming Together
On Saturday, December 5, 2026, The PEACES Collective will bring our village together for our 4th Annual Community for Action, an elevated Sneaker Ball at The Loft in Baltimore.
It will be an afternoon of live entertainment, food, dancing, fellowship, and purpose as we celebrate the people who make community possible while raising support for our work.
So put on your favorite sneakers and come celebrate with us.
Because community isn't simply where we live.
