Building a Literacy Movement: It Takes All of Us

How Volunteers, Community Partnerships, and Collective Action Are Shaping the Future of Our Children
“It takes a village to raise a child.” But it takes an engaged and committed village to build a future where every child has the opportunity to thrive.
At The PEACES Collective, we believe that literacy is more than the ability to read and write. It is the foundation for learning, confidence, opportunity, and lifelong success. It gives children the tools to discover who they are, understand the world around them, and imagine what they can become.
Yet too many children begin their educational journeys without access to the books, resources, and reading experiences that help develop strong literacy skills.
Changing that reality requires more than a program. It requires a movement.
A literacy movement brings together families, educators, volunteers, businesses, and community organizations around a shared commitment: ensuring that every child, regardless of their circumstances, has the opportunity to become a confident and capable reader.
And everyone has a role to play.
The Power of Showing Up: Why Volunteers Matter
Imagine a classroom filled with young children eagerly waiting for someone to open a book. As the story unfolds, hands go up, questions are asked, laughter fills the room, and imaginations take flight.
This is the magic of StoryTime.
Through our SpREAD the Word literacy initiative, volunteers bring stories to life for children ages 3–6 in Head Start and Pre-K classrooms. In partnership with St. Vincent de Paul Head Start in Baltimore, our volunteer readers engage children in meaningful reading experiences that encourage curiosity, creativity, and a love of books.
But something even more important happens during these interactions.
Children learn that someone cares enough to spend time with them. They discover that their ideas matter, their questions deserve answers, and their voices deserve to be heard.
We carefully select engaging, age-appropriate, and culturally relevant books that reflect children's experiences while introducing them to different people, cultures, and possibilities.
Our volunteers are not simply reading stories. They are building relationships, nurturing confidence, and helping children see themselves as readers and learners.
And the benefits extend beyond the children.
Volunteers often discover that the experience enriches their own lives. The excitement of a child recognizing a familiar word, the laughter shared over a funny illustration, or the thoughtful questions that emerge from a story remind us of the joy of learning and the power of human connection.
Sometimes the greatest gift we give is our time. And sometimes the greatest reward is what we receive in return.
As we expand SpREAD the Word, we invite more community members to become volunteer readers and literacy advocates. Whether you participate in person or virtually, your time can make a meaningful difference.

From StoryTime to Home Libraries: Creating a Culture of Reading
Our vision extends beyond the classroom.
We want children to experience the joy of reading wherever they are, in school, at home, and throughout their communities.
That is why building home libraries is another essential component of SpREAD the Word.
For children who have limited access to books at home, owning a collection of books can create opportunities for learning, discovery, and family connection.
A home library encourages children to revisit favorite stories, explore new interests, and develop a sense of ownership over their reading journey. It also gives parents, grandparents, siblings, and caregivers opportunities to read together and create lasting memories.
Our goal is to provide 10 carefully selected books for each child, helping families establish home libraries that support early literacy development.
But we cannot accomplish this vision alone.
It takes volunteers to read. It takes donors to provide books. It takes community partners to open doors. And it takes families to keep the stories alive.
That is what a literacy movement looks like people working together to create opportunities that extend far beyond any single classroom or event.
Community for ACTION: Turning Our Commitment Into Impact
On Saturday, December 5, 2026, The PEACES Collective will host our 4th Annual Community for ACTION, bringing together supporters, partners, and community champions for an unforgettable afternoon of celebration and purpose.
This year's event theme is “From Soles to Stories: Stepping Into A Child’s Future,” an elevated Sneaker Ball, featuring food, music, dancing, and live entertainment, including Grammy-nominated violinist Chelsey Green and The Green Project.
But beyond the celebration is a mission that matters deeply.
Our goal is to raise the funds needed to build 500 home libraries for children and families in Maryland.
That's 500 children with books of their own. Five hundred opportunities to encourage curiosity, strengthen family connections, and nurture a lifelong love of reading.
The event is more than a fundraiser. It is an opportunity to demonstrate what collective action can accomplish.
Every ticket purchased, sponsorship secured, and donation received brings us closer to placing books into the hands and homes of children who need them.
When we gather on December 5, we will not simply be celebrating another year of service. We will be investing in the future of our communities.
And we want you to be part of it.

A Movement Begins With People Who Care
Building a literacy movement does not require everyone to do the same thing. It requires each of us to do something.
Some will volunteer for an hour to read with children. Others will donate books, sponsor home libraries, or help organize community events. Some will introduce our mission to friends, businesses, and organizations willing to lend their support.
Every contribution matters.
And when these individual acts of care come together, they create something much greater: a community that takes responsibility for the success and well-being of its children.
At The PEACES Collective, our mission is to build thriving communities through creativity, education, and cooperative economics. SpREAD the Word brings that mission to life by connecting people, resources, and opportunities around one of the most important investments we can make, our children.
We believe every child deserves to experience the joy of reading, the confidence that comes with learning, and the freedom to imagine a future filled with possibilities.
But believing is only the beginning.
A movement grows when people take action.
