Why Home Libraries Matter More Than Ever

At PEACES Collective, we believe every child deserves more than just the ability to read.

They deserve the right to learn. The right to imagine. The right to access opportunity.

And in today’s world, that right is still not equally distributed.

Across Maryland and beyond, far too many families are navigating school systems, economic barriers, and structural inequities that make something as basic as having books at home feel out of reach.

That is why home libraries matter.

Literacy Is Not a Privilege - It Is a Right

Let’s be honest: literacy gaps are not accidental.

They are the result of long-standing disparities in:

  • Educational funding

  • Neighborhood resources

  • Access to culturally responsive materials

  • Support systems for families

When a child grows up without books in their home, it isn’t because families don’t care.

It’s because the system has failed to provide equitable access.

A home library is not just a collection of stories.

It is a form of justice..

What Happens When Children Have Books at Home?

When children have consistent access to books, research shows they are more likely to:

  • Build vocabulary early

  • Strengthen reading comprehension

  • Perform better academically

  • Develop lifelong confidence

But beyond the data, something deeper happens:

A child begins to believe their future matters.

A book says: You belong in the world of learning.

SpREAD the Word: Building Futures One Library at a Time

Through our literacy initiative SpREAD the Word, PEACES Collective is working to ensure families across the DMV have access to home libraries that reflect both learning and representation.

Last year, with community support, we helped establish 150 home libraries for Head Start families in Baltimore City and Howard County.

This year, our goal is bold:

📚 500 families equipped with home libraries for the 2024–2025 school year.

Because literacy is a foundation — not an extra.

How You Can Join the Movement

This work is community-powered. You can help by:

✅ Donating toward a home library ✅ Sponsoring a child’s reading future ✅ Volunteering your time ✅ Sharing our mission across Maryland

Every book placed in a home is a step toward equity.

Let’s build a future where every child has stories on their shelf — and possibility in their hands.

Together, we SpREAD the Word. Together, we build justice.
